Hi Patty and Bruce,
I finally got all my dirty clothes washed and am catching up on my email after WOR.  I will send you some pictures next week after I download them from my camera.  I enjoyed meeting you two at getting to paddle with Patty.  Hope to see you next year, or at GAF in September, if you come.

Bruce,

Thanks for showing me the rivers in your neck of the woods this past weekend.  I had a great time, especially the Cheat Canyon!  Looking forward to more WV paddling in the future.

this is in reference to the post by Daniel Wilson.  I've run the South Branch from Big Bend to Sector previously.  Camping is available in the Lower Smokehole canyon in the Blue Rock area and just below it.  After passing Petersburg, we arranged to stay at a riverside property owned by Doug's Cabins ??(I believe, my buddy set this up).  We spent the third night in the Trough, took out at Sector.  Below here, there are very few, if any, places to camp along the river, unless you arrange to stay at a riverside campground or at an outfitters property.  There is something different about the property laws along the Potomac than the rest of West Virginia.  In the Potamac drainage, people own to the low water mark and apparently in some places, the entire riverbed.  In the rest of WV, folks own property to the average high water mark.  So, even camping on a gravel bar, on the South Branch, if it's privately owned can cause problems if the property owner doesn't want you there.  I would stay away from overnight camping on the Southbranch below the Trough, unless you do some major scouting and procure places you are allowed to camp prior to making the trip.  Some better alternatives in the area include the main stem of the Potomac from Old town or Paw Paw to Cahill(sp?) Station (entire north side of river is Federal land, C&O Canal N.P.) or the Cacapon River from the US 50 bridge in Capon Bridge to the bridge below Largent.  If you're interested, email me and I can give you additional information & approx. GPS coords. of campsites.  ANDY.

hello,
this is my second year paddling and i truely love it.  i ran the smoke hole canyon last week on the south branch potomac river.  i did not know what to expect, we were carring camping gear, and made it about five miles into the canyon before we wrecked the boat and had to quit for the day.
i have a question about this part of the river.  i want to take my son camping on the river and run from big bend campground to romney on the south branch.  does anyone know the conditions of this particular part of the river.  i need to stay safe since i am new to this and my son is only 14.  any info would be greatly appreciated.  thanks

I bet I know where you wrecked. If you took out in Petersburg, you won't see anything more difficult below there. There will be way more flatwater. Before entering the Trough, there is a big ledge that has a sneak on the right. Good camping exists below. This can be limited due to it's popularity. Remember to consider water level. You may want to buy the West Virginia guide book (A Canoeing and Kayaking Guide to West Virginia, 5th ed.)  for future reference. Also, check out americanwhitewater.org. Any other questions, I'd be glad to help.

I'm a Stony-local.  There are a few nice pics/ descriptions of the canyon and Sahde creek. Keep up the good work! Anyone considering a trip to this watershade should definitely take action.  Around 4.5' the canyon is glorious, less technical than at lower levels and things start to get big and continuous (3+).  When the gauge is over 5.5' the entire watershed is raging, take advantage of the headwaters.  Shade creek is a blast in canoe or kayak at this level.  For serious adventure, paddle shade creek into the the canyon and take out at paint/capenter's park (about 13miles).

Hello !  My wife and I paddle creeks in Ohio, Pa and WV as much as we can in search of big smallies. We also have a site that we just started called fishohiocanoeclub.net. We're hoping to get some members so we don't have to take 2 vehicles every time we go. This is a nice site, I'm going to add it to my favorites.
